Kernpunkte

Human triggered avalanches will be possible for Tuesday. New snow and strong southwest winds will form wind slabs on lee aspects. Look for signs of instability near and above treeline. If you see any recent avalanches and/or cracking, seek slopes below 30 degrees.

    With more snow forecasted for Tuesday and strong southwest winds, we will see fresh wind slabs form at mid and upper elevations. As snow continues to fall throughout the day, we can expect the avalanche danger to increase. Any wind slab activity will be related to the new snow we receive. Remember snow can accumulate 3-5x deeper.

    Wind slabs can often be found below ridgelines and areas that catch snow. With strong winds, we can sometimes see slabs form in unusual places. Use visual clues to look for slab formation such as wavy snow surface and pillow like features. Consider easing into terrain and assess the snow using safe test slopes. If you see any signs of instability, stick to lower angle terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

While touring Broken Top and Ball Butte on Monday, I did not see any signs of instability. There were some remnants of old avalanche debris likely from the previous storm system. In the alpine the snow surface is a mix of wind effected snow, scouring, and packed powder. In more protected areas below treeline, I found about 20cm of the most recent storm snow.
