Avalanche Activity

LO for 13/3. Initial wet snow instabilities. Unstable windslab then develops mainly on S-W aspects above 900m. Considerable hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Initial wet snow instabilities, mainly on North-West to North-East aspects above 1000 metres will reduce as the temperature drops overnight and the snowpack consolidates. Fresh unstable windslab will develop from early morning with greatest accumulations on South to West aspects above 900 metres. Fragile cornices will develop above these aspects. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Light to moderate, variable winds overnight will become North-Easterly during the day and increase to gale force in the afternoon. A dry evening followed by precipitation, heaviest in the morning, falling as snow to increasingly low levels through the day. The freezing level will be above the summits in the evening falling to around 200 metres by the end of the period. Observed Weather Influences: Overnight snow turned to rain at most levels during the day. Strong South-Westerly winds and a freezing level around 1300 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Areas of poorly bonded snow are present mainly on West through North to North-East aspects above 900 metres. The older snowpack remains firm and stable. At lower elevations the snowpack is thawing and consolidating. Cornices are prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
