It is likely that you can trigger wind slab avalanches on Thursday. Another storm is ramping up, increasing the avalanche danger throughout the day. Avoid all slopes steeper than 35 degrees, and consider staying away from the runout beneath those areas as well.

    Numerous natural and human triggered avalanches occurred in neighboring zones in the last few days. Avalanches are failing up to several feet deep, down to a crust which in some spots harbors persistent weak grains.  Where this weak layer is present, snow conditions are more touchy and may propagate further.  You could find this weak interface in areas of the West Central zone as well, although the weak layer is probably shallower, as the storm didn't produce as much snow in this area.

    As you move along feel for changes in the snow, noting when it becomes stiffer and more pillow-like in appearance. Wind slabs are areas that you definitely want to avoid.  Stay off wind loaded slopes steeper than 35 degrees, and also consider avoiding the terrain beneath those steep areas as well.

Avalanche Discussion

Chances of avalanches decreased with Wednesday's fair weather, but human triggered avalanches are still likely.  Thursday snowfall rates will increase throughout the day, increasing the danger after the brief lull.

During the storm natural avalanches reached down to the valley floor in a popular spot in the West North zone, where they nearly struck a group of ski tourers (see video below). While that area received more snow than we did, this is a good reminder to maintain awareness of the terrain above you. At lower elevations you will still find challenging conditions with open creeks and variable snow surfaces including crusts coated by very little fresh snow. 

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
