Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Further deposits of unstable windslab will accumulate tonight and through the morning. Significant accumulations becoming more wide spread will be found in steep locations on mainly East to South aspects above 800 metres though other aspects and elevations will also be affected. Cornices will be fragile in these locations also. Areas exposed to the wind will be firm and generally stable. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Fresh to strong North-Westerly winds this evening with further snowfall above 250 metres. Snow showers to lower elevations for the remainder of the night and through the morning as the Northerly winds ease. Dryer in the afternoon with light to moderate winds. Observed Weather Influences: Prolonged showers falling as snow above around 300 meters this morning, easing with brighter intervals during the afternoon. Winds have been fresh to strong from North or North-Westerly directions. ObservedSnowStability: There are fresh accumulations of new and wind blown snow on many aspects and to lower levels. Above 650 metres these accumulations are gaining depth on top of a generally firm and stable existing snowpack. At higher elevations, above 850 metres, unstable wind slab is present in steep wind sheltered locations mainly on East to South aspects with other aspects affected through variable winds. Cornices are fragile in these locations also. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
