New fallen snow on warm ground can lead to loose snow slides!

At altitudes above 800 metres above sea level, the precipitation falls as snow. However, the new fallen snow can start to slide due to the warm ground. However, the loose snow slides remain small. At low altitudes, rain is mixed in, but due to the smaller amount of new snow, wet snow slides are only possible in isolated cases below 800 metres.

Snowpack Structure

Between 10 and 30 cm of new fallen snow on mostly barren ground. Rain is also mixed in below 800 metres.

Weather Forecast

In the evening, a cold front with strong to stormy winds reaches Lower Austria from the north-west. The first heavy precipitation will fall as rain up to 1500 metres, after which the snowfall level will quickly drop below 1000 metres. Behind the cold front, the precipitation will weaken and there will also be dry spells on Thursday night. A northerly dust situation will then set in, with snow falling at times at low altitudes on Thursday. In the Türnitz Alps, 20 to 30 cm of new fallen snow will fall above around 1000 m, otherwise it will mostly be 10 to 20 cm. Rain is mixed in at low altitudes. Temperatures will plummet: At 1500 metres, temperatures will drop from +5 degrees on Wednesday evening to -5 degrees on Thursday afternoon. Stormy to gale-force winds with peak wind speeds between 60 and 100 km/h from north to north-west.

Tendency

The avalanche risk will increase on Friday. An area of low pressure will bring another 20 to 50 cm of new fallen snow, especially in the eastern mountains. Stormy winds will continue to blow.
