A few centimetres of new fallen snow are added overnight, but these are usually blown away by the wind. Due to the warm ground, the snow can occasionally start to glide on steep slopes or in steep gullies. Pillows of wind drifted snow are prone to triggering at medium altitudes.

Snowpack Structure

In the Gutenstein Alps, 10 to 40 cm of new fallen snow fell on apery, warm ground. On the Hochwechsel and in the Bucklige Welt, the amount of fresh snow was significantly less (around 5 to 20 cm). The strong wind caused drift snow packs to form at higher altitudes.

Weather Forecast

During the coming night, the cloud cover will still be mostly dense, especially in the Gutenstein Alps it will still snow lightly at times, but the strong wind will blow away most of the new fallen snow. On Saturday, the mountains will initially be covered in cloud, but there will be hardly any snow. During the daytime changes, the clouds will become increasingly soft from the west. However, it will remain mostly cloudy in the Gutenstein Alps. The temperature at an altitude of 2000 metres will be between -10 and -7 degrees. The temperature at an altitude of 1500 metres will be between -6 and -3 degrees. There will be strong to gale-force winds with gusts of between 50 and 90 km/h from the north. The snowfall level is between the valleys and around 800 metres above sea level.

Tendency

The avalanche risk is not expected to increase. On Sunday, it will be mostly cloudy and it will snow lightly from time to time. However, the amount of new snow is low. The wind will continue to be stormy in places.
