Avalanche Activity

CM 23.12.24 Mod hazard. NE to S aspects above 850m. New snow instability, wet instability later.

Forecast Snow Stability: Instabilities will be present in all recently formed windslab on steep North East through East to South aspects above 850m. Period of poorer stability in these locations as temperatures rise during the afternoon. Recently formed cornices will become weak and prone to collapse later in the day. Good stability on ridges and all recent windward slopes. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Snow showers dying out overnight then dry before the onset of a little light rain in the afternoon. Remaining cold for a time but noticeably milder during the afternoon. North West winds easing to light before dawn, becoming moderate South Westerly by early evening. Observed Weather Influences: Cold and wintry with frequent snow showers on strong West North Westerly winds. ObservedSnowStability: Poor stability on all steep recent lee slopes particularly North East through East to South East facing aspects above 800m. Most affected areas are gullies and steep coire backwalls. Recent avalanche debris in a steep cross loaded gully feature in Coire Ardair. All windward aspects have been heavily scoured and are stable. Some new cornice development also noted over steeper lee slopes. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
