A widespread wet loose avalanche cycle is expected on Friday. These avalanches will run naturally in areas steeper than 35 degrees. Stay away from all avalanche paths, including the runout beneath steep slopes while this storm runs its course.

    Wet loose avalanches will occur on Friday as we receive extensive moisture with a high freezing level. As these avalanches travel downslope they will pick up more mass and fan out, becoming more destructive as they move further downhill. They could entrain all of the new snow which we have received in the last week, possibly up to several feet deep. This type of avalanche tends to run far, so in addition to staying off slopes steeper than 35 degrees, do not linger in flatter areas beneath steep slopes.  

    Expect to see numerous wet loose avalanches bigger than these on Friday.

    Natural and human triggered storm slab avalanches will continue at upper elevations on Friday. Numerous storm slab avalanches, both natural and human triggered, occurred in the last four days, and more snowfall and wind will keep this avalanche problem elevated. Expect slabs to increase in size as snowfall continues all day. Wind will also affect the snow, redistributing it into even thicker slabs on leeward slopes. Reactivity is uncertain, as warm temperatures could make them more stubborn to trigger. This day is not a good day to find out how reactive they are. Stay off steep slopes while the storm rages on. 

    Numerous slab avalanches like this one have occurred in the last 4 days.

Friday you will find many bullseye avalanche clues the moment you step out the door: new snow (or rain), wind, and recent warming. This is a day to play it safe and let nature run its course. Your best bet is to stay on lower angle mid elevation slopes to have a fun and safe New Year’s Day.  Have a happy New Year!

Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
