New snow from the past several days has bonded well to the widespread supportable melt/freeze crust from last week. Below the crust the snowpack is stable and isothermic. With temperatures forecast to peak just above freezing, cloud cover and light winds, the avalanche hazard is low today.

    We have entered the classic spring diurnal wet loose avalanche hazard cycle: Each day the upper snowpack warms and loses cohesion as temperatures climb, with wet loose avalanche hazard peaking in the afternoon. The snowpack stabilizes and resets each night as temperatures fall below freezing.

    The key to navigating this cycle is to get an early start so you can ski and ride on cold stable snow and be off, and out from under, steep slopes when wet loose avalanches are more likely from mid-day onward.

    Today, with the temperature forecast to peak just above freezing and cloud cover (which blocks solar radiation), wet loose avalanches are unlikely at upper and mid elevations. Nevertheless, pay attention to the surface snow and be prepared to move onto lower angle terrain if you see signs of instability like large gouging roller balls and snow that sticks to your skis and skins. On steep slopes it is possible to entrain the soft snow sitting on top of the crust, so be prepared to manage sluff. At lower elevations, where temperatures will be closer to 40°, wet loose avalanches are possible.

    This weekend and into early next week temperatures are forecast to steadily raise, increasing the likelihood of wet loose avalanches each afternoon. Glide cracks have started to appear on various slopes, and cornices are starting to droop significantly. Give these features wide margins of safety as temperatures continue to rise.

Avalanche Discussion

Today is IPAC’s last avalanche forecast for the season. With a warm and dry December contributing to a late start to the skiing and riding season, the end of forecasts feels abrupt and too soon. But the isothermic snowpack and onset of a predictable diurnal cycle mean its time.

Six inches of new snow from the past few days sitting on top of a widespread supportable crust made for pretty pleasant skiing yesterday. We even found pockets of deeper soft snow at upper and mid elevation north aspects that were absolutely delightful. At lower elevations finding enough snow to successfully recreate is becoming increasingly difficult, especially on sun exposed aspects. Logs, rocks, exposed dirt and running water are all starting to complicate access to ridable terrain.

Keep your head on the swivel and be aware that avalanche hazards will continue to change as you recreate into April. Spring snowstorms, rapid warming, rain and wind events will increase the likelihood of avalanches. When in doubt, choose conservative terrain. Stay safe out there and look after each other.

This has been a challenging and tragic season for many within our communities, with two fatalities that occurred within the IPAC forecast area. Our heartfelt condolences continue to go out to the friends and families of those who were lost.
