Kernpunkte

Warming temperatures and sunshine will quickly destabilize snow surfaces on steep sunny slopes at all elevations and could produce large avalanches. It also remains possible to trigger a large avalanche in very steep (>35°) terrain on slopes loaded by the wind. Look for pillows and drifts around cliff bands, ridgelines, and steep terrain features like couloirs. When small wet avalanches begin to originate from rocky outcrops and snow surfaces become moist, move to shadier slopes. Watch for natural avalanche activity above you if traversing under steep sunny slopes later in the day. Warming temperatures will increase the likelihood of triggering an avalanche. Seek lower-angle slopes not exposed to the wind and sun to avoid these problems.

    As temperatures rise throughout the day, expect widespread wet loose activity in steep terrain beginning on east aspects and continuing to south and west aspects as the day progresses. These avalanches could entrain large amounts of snow and will be possible above 9500 feet, where temperatures are forecasted to be above freezing with sunny skies. Most of these avalanches will likely be in the D1 range but will be big enough to knock you over or off of your sled - keep that in mind if there are cliffs or terrain traps below you. Look for pinwheels and rollerballs originating from rocky outcrops and monitor snow surfaces for increasing moisture.  Move to shadier slopes and be mindful of steep slopes above you and increasing overhead avalanche hazard.

    Slabs up to a foot thick that formed earlier this week from strong southwest winds remain a problem.  I am most concerned with very steep (>35°) wind-loaded slopes below cliffs and in crossloaded features like entrances to couloirs. A combination of warming temperatures, sunshine and very little cooling effect from light westerly winds will combine to increase the sensitivity of these slabs as the day progresses.  Yesterday, multiple small avalanches were observed on Ferry in wind-affected terrain.  In the Tetons yesterday, a rider ewas caught, carried and evacuated with injuries after triggering a small wind slab in upper elevation east facing terrain. It is a good reminder that even a small avalanche can carry high consequences if it  knocks you off your feet above cliffs or terrain traps.   As you consider managing this problem, remember that cracking at your ski tips might not be evident, and avoiding wind-loaded slopes will be a safer technique than ski cutting a stiffening slab.

    Minimize time spent under large cornices. Warming temperatures will increase the likelihood of cornice breaks, creating very large triggers that can impact weak layers.

    These recent soft slab natural avalanches all failed on an E aspect between 8,700' and 9,500', around 5-6 inches deep.
