Kernpunkte

Generally stable avalanche conditions exist across the forecast region. You can find small, wet loose instabilities on southwest, south, and southeast slopes near and below treeline. Avoid being on or below these slopes in the middle hours of the day to reduce your exposure.

Today will be the warmest day of the week thus far.  Temperatures at the Mammoth Mountain Sesame plot (9014 ft) stayed above freezing all night, and temperatures at the summit barely dipped below 32 degrees F. Sun-exposed slopes that still have sufficient snow will warm up midday, and small, human-triggered avalanches will be possible. Wet loose avalanches can also be triggered by melting snow and falling rocks from above. Prevailing northeast breezes have been keeping the snow cool above treeline, and you are most likely to encounter wet loose avalanches near and below treeline. Roller balls that grow larger as they roll downhill are a good indicator that wet loose avalanches are possible.  Avoid being on or below south-trending slopes in the middle of the day to reduce your exposure.

Avalanche Discussion

Beautiful weather, solid coverage, and generally stable avalanche conditions will make for another excellent day to be out in the mountains. People are still finding enjoyable surface conditions throughout the forecast area - the most favorable of which seem to be on sheltered east, north and northwest slopes. Continued above average temperatures mean that small, wet loose avalanches will remain possible on solar slopes during the peak heating hours of the day.  Additionally, rockfall has been observed on similar slopes throughout the region.  To reduce your exposure to these hazards, and find more enjoyable skiing, you can seek out polar aspects on your endeavors.  If you do, consider bringing skin wax for the lower elevation norths, and possibly ski crampons and other sharps if you're heading into the alpine.
