Rapid loading from heavy snowfall and strong winds are going to quickly overwhelm facets and depth hoar that are widespread in our shallow snowpack. This is the first significant test these fragile weak layers have had all season, and we expect that it'll be enough of a load to tip the scales where we see widespread natural avalanches, especially on northerly and east aspects. There are several weak layers in our snowpack, from faceted crusts to depth hoar near the ground, but the persistent slab problem is the same. Expect avalanches to break deeper in the snowpack and in some cases near the ground, where avalanches will take with it most of the seasons' snowpack.
Loud audible whumpfs or collapses and shooting cracks are indications you've found this strong over weak snowpack structure. These types of conditions lend itself to remotely triggering avalanches. Avoid being beneath steep slopes above as it's possible to trigger avalanches from long distances away.
Faceted weak layers and depth hoar are widespread in our snowpack from the dry winter we've had. Recent strong winds over the last week have drifted snow into harder more cohesive slabs. In this pit we were getting failures on Isolation on the depth hoar below.
Heavy snowfall today with strong winds will add a load and more than likely will tip the scales to where we see large natural avalanches.
