Kernpunkte

Triggering avalanches in recently wind drifted snow will be possible in the mid and upper elevations. You can avoid these avalanches by sticking to wind scoured slopes or by staying on low angle terrain. Rain is expected to fall in the mountains at low and mid elevations and wet snow avalanches will be possible on slopes with rain saturated snow especially in steep terrain.

This problem will be most prominent and larger above treeline. New snow from the last 24 hours combined with incoming snow and increasing wind speeds will lead to wind slabs building.  If you are finding those 'filled in' slopes with good riding, chances are that is an effect of the wind. Be cautious on slopes where the snow seems much deeper compared to the surrounding terrain.  Remember that cracking in the wind slab or signs of recent avalanches are good indicators of unstable snow.

These avalanches will mostly be very small below treeline because there really isn't very much snow on the ground at low elevations. Wet loose avalanches will  have a little more volume near treeline where there is more snow and where the wind has created deep drifts on leeward slopes and features. This problem will develop when rain begins falling in the mountains and will be limited to the slopes getting enough rain to saturate the snow. This problem may creep up into the open alpine terrain if rain persists there long enough.  Watch for roller balls and pinwheels as precursors to this problem.

Avalanche Discussion

Cornices have the chance to build in the high elevation terrain. Fresh cornices are fragile and break easily. If you encounter cornices, avoid walking out on them.

Early season avalanches can have increased consequences due to the abundance of exposed rocks and other features that are not covered by the early season snowpack.
