Kernpunkte

New snow and wind have created dangerous avalanche conditions. Human triggered avalanches are likely on steep wind loaded slopes. New snow is also stressing weak layers buried deeper in the snowpack. Avoid being on or under steep, rocky, wind loaded slopes and cross loaded gullies.

    Moderate westerly winds with gusts in the 40s mph overnight combined with up to 12 inches of snow in the last 48 hours have formed wind slabs on lee aspects above 8000 feet. Another 5-8 inches is forecasted to fall today with continued strong and gusty winds. New slabs will be up to 2 feet thick and very likely be triggered by the weight of a rider. The danger will be highest above 9000 on steep, rocky and wind loaded slopes. Small avalanches have the potential to step down and impact deeper weak layers, creating large avalanches. Very strong winds may have loaded slopes and terrain features at lower elevations than you might expect.

    Strong winds from the road looking towards Two Ocean. Expect to find new wind slabs. Shooting cracks are a sure sign of instability.

    Weak layers of snow that formed in November are buried 2-3 feet deep beneath hard slabs. A foot of snow over the last 48 hours, with more today, continues to stress these weak layers. The weight of a rider could be enough to trigger an avalanche. Very steep, rocky, and wind affected slopes in the upper elevations are most suspect.  Triggering a wind slab in new snow could easily impact deeper weak layers and cause a large avalanche. The snowpack will need time to adjust.

    A persistent slab avalanche on Barber's Point. This avalanche failed on weak snow formed in November. This terrain is wind loaded and very steep. A good slope to avoid today.

Avalanche Discussion

Buried weak layers on Togwotee need time to adjust to the new round of snow. An inch of SWE is forecast at upper elevations. Even if we receive half of that, it could be enough to tip the balance and see natural avalanche activity. Keep your head on a swivel out there and watch for signs of unstable snow, particularly on wind loaded slopes. Shooting cracks in the snow surface and collapses point to instability. Keep your slope angles low if you find these signs.
