Avalanche Activity

As a consequence of new snow and wind the avalanche prone locations will become more prevalent as the day progresses. Above the tree line a considerable avalanche danger will prevail.

The fresh snow as well as the wind slabs that are forming during the snowfall must be evaluated with care and prudence in all aspects above the tree line. The avalanche prone locations are to be found especially adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls and on steep slopes. At elevated altitudes these avalanche prone locations are more prevalent. They are barely recognisable because of the poor visibility. New snow and wind slabs can be released, even by a single winter sport participant or triggered naturally. Additionally avalanches can also be triggered in the old snowpack and reach large size. In particular at low and intermediate altitudes medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large moist and wet avalanches are possible as the snowfall level rises. Careful route selection and spacing between individuals are recommended.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area over a wide area 15 to 25 cm of snow will fall above approximately 1800 m. The moderate wind will transport the new snow significantly. The wind slabs are lying on soft layers in particular on shady slopes. Up to intermediate altitudes rain will fall over a wide area. These weather conditions will give rise to increasing moistening of the snowpack. Individual weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack on shady slopes. This applies in particular at elevated altitudes.

Tendency

As a consequence of new snow and wind there will be an increase in the danger.
