Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: A period of instability will occur in the evening and overnight as the snow becomes saturated during a period of rain. There is the potential for cornice collapse and wet snow avalanches in steep locations on North-West, through North to East aspects above 850 metres. During the day a stabilising trend will become established, with snow becoming firm above 950 metres. Isolated, mostly avoidable, windslab deposits will start to develop on the same aspects. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: A period of rain will occur at all levels in the evening. After a brief dry period rain is expected to transition to sleet and then snow above around 1000 metres. Winds will be very strong and from the West-South-West. The freezing level will be above the summits falling to around 1000 metres by dawn. Observed Weather Influences: Showers overnight with some snow on the highest summits. A dry morning was followed by persistent rain at all levels in the afternoon. Winds were mostly strong and from the South-West. The freezing level was above the highest summits at midday. ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack is moist all levels, demonstrating instability with the onset of rising temperatures and rain. Debris was present from wet loose avalanche activity on North-West and North aspects at a height of 700 metres, along with evidence of cornice collapse. Snow loss has occurred overnight with most snow patches and ribbons being present above 600 metres. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
