Avalanche Activity

As a consequence of new snow and wind the avalanche prone locations will become more prevalent.

In some localities 10 to 20 cm of snow will fall until the evening above approximately 1000 m. As a consequence of snowfall and the moderate to strong wind, fresh snow drift accumulations will form in the course of the day. The old wind slabs will be covered with new snow and therefore difficult to recognise. Fresh and somewhat older wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in some cases. The avalanche prone locations are to be found especially in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain and at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. In very isolated cases avalanches can also be triggered in the old snowpack and reach large size.

Snowpack Structure

Weak layers exist in the old snowpack in particular on steep west, north and east facing slopes.
