Avalanche Activity

At intermediate and high altitudes a considerable avalanche danger will prevail.

Some snow will fall until late morning. As a consequence of new snow and a moderate wind from northwesterly directions, sometimes large wind slabs will form. This applies in particular on steep slopes, as well as in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain above the tree line. The fresh wind slabs can be released by small loads. Avalanches can be released in deeper layers in particular on very steep shady slopes. Medium-sized to large natural dry avalanches are possible as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation. This applies in particular in case of releases originating from very steep sunny starting zones that have retained the snow thus far. Careful route selection and spacing between individuals are recommended.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 5 to 15 cm of snow will fall until late morning. As a consequence of new snow and a sometimes moderate wind, further wind slabs will form. The new snow and wind slabs are lying on soft layers in particular on wind-protected shady slopes. Intermediate and high altitudes: Isolated avalanche prone weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack in particular on very steep shady slopes.
