Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs will be covered with new snow and therefore difficult to recognise.

As a consequence of new snow and a moderate to strong wind from southwesterly directions, further wind slabs will form from early morning. The fresh and somewhat older wind slabs can still be released above approximately 2300 m. The avalanche prone locations are to be found on steep slopes and adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. Late morning: The wind slabs of the last few days will be covered with new snow and therefore difficult to recognise. As a consequence of the snowfall dry loose snow slides are possible as the day progresses, but they will be mostly small. This applies on extremely steep slopes. Ski touring and other off-piste activities, including snowshoe hiking, call for caution and restraint.

Snowpack Structure

The Avalanche Warning Service currently has only a small amount of information that has been collected in the field. 25 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall from late morning. The upper section of the snowpack is unfavourably layered, especially at intermediate and high altitudes. Up to 2400 m rain fell on Friday. As a consequence of falling temperatures a crust formed on the surface on Saturday. Below approximately 2400 m the snowpack is more stable.
