Avalanche Activity

Fresh wind slabs are to be evaluated with care and prudence. In addition an increasing number of loose snow avalanches are to be expected.

As a consequence of new snow and a strong to storm force wind, further wind slabs will form. These can be released even by a single winter sport participant in particular on northwest to north to southeast facing aspects. Caution is to be exercised in particular in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain. The prevalence of avalanche prone locations and likelihood of triggering will increase with altitude. More frequent loose snow avalanches are to be expected, but they will be mostly small, in the event of prolonged bright spells especially. In addition a latent danger of gliding avalanches exists. This applies on steep grassy slopes below approximately 2600 m. In isolated cases avalanches are large. Areas with glide cracks are to be avoided.

Snowpack Structure

5 to 20 cm of snow fell on Wednesday. Up to 10 cm of snow will fall on Thursday. The wind will be strong to storm force. Fresh and somewhat older wind slabs are lying on soft layers in particular on shady slopes at elevated altitudes.

Tendency

Fresh wind slabs represent the main danger. As a consequence of warming during the day moist loose snow avalanches are to be expected. Gliding snow requires caution.
