Kernpunkte

Areas of unstable snow exist and present a significant hazard to people recreating in avalanche terrain. Excellent terrain evaluation and snowpack stability assessment skills are essential for safe travel in avalanche terrain.

Northwest winds continue to build wind slabs on leeward aspects. At the mid and upper elevations humans who venture onto steep wind loaded slopes could trigger wind slabs up to two feet deep. At the lower elevations some potential may exist for people to trigger isolated pockets of wind slab up to a foot deep. These wind slabs have some potential to step down and initiate the failure of a deep persistent slab.

At the mid and upper elevations older persistent slabs up to four feet in depth lie upon weak layers of faceted snow that formed during the January dry spell. These slabs could be triggered by humans in steep terrain and may become more sensitive to triggering as air temperatures warm and the sun heats up the surface of suspect slopes.

In isolated areas at the lower elevations older slabs up to a foot in depth lie upon well developed depth hoar. Some potential may exist for humans to trigger of of these older shallow persistent slabs on steep slopes, especially during the warmer portion of the day.

Avalanche Discussion

A weak ridge of high pressure will move over the area. On Saturday there will be abundant sunshine. Temperatures in the mountains will rise into the mid 20s to 30s. Winds will be west at 10 to 20 miles per hour.Unstable conditions pose a serious threat to humans who will be recreating in avalanche terrain. Warming conditions are likely to create a CONSIDERABLE avalanche hazard. DANGEROUS slab avalanches up to four feet in depth could be triggered by humans who venture onto steep slopes.
