Kernpunkte

Recently fallen snow could be triggered as soft wind slabs in steep terrrain on east, north and west aspects at the upper elevations. This snow fell upon a weak snow layer that lies on a hard rain crust. Early season conditions exist, and even small slides can cause serious injury. On other aspects and at lower elevations, avalanches are not possible due to a shallow early season snowpack.

Soft wind slabs to a foot in depth could be triggered where recent snow lies upon hard rain crusts that formed in October.

Avalanche Discussion

The current snowfall is to continue through this evening and taper off by morning. Four to six inches of accumulation is expected at the higher elevations. Winds are to be relatively light with averages of ten to fifteen miles per hour. Thanksgiving day will have gradual clearing. Highs in the mountains look to be near twenty degrees with valleys reaching the upper twenties to low thirties. The avalanche hazard could possibly rise to Moderate at the high elevations if enough snow falls to increase both the sensitivity and size of soft slabs that lie upon the old snow surface.
