Slabs of wind drifted snow will appear in isolated areas on the east and southeast facing slopes of steep terrain. Avalanches will be possible, but their relative size and potential for destruction will remain small. Small avalanches can still be consequential. Firm snow surfaces will have the safer option for steep ravine skiing today.

    The 1 to 3 inches of new snow accumulationyesterday was redistributed around the range by moderate northwest winds. Slabs of wind blown snow were created on aspects facing primarily east and southeast. These newly deposited slabs will be stubborn to triggering and isolated in their distribution across the steep slopes. Surface snow conditions will consist of softer newly created wind blown drifts, older firm wind slabs, and icy exposed areas scoured by strong winds. If you initiate failure in a slab you could be swept off your feet and dragged into immovable objects.

Avalanche Discussion

Northwest winds yesterday and overnight have blown the new snow into drifted slabs capable of creating small avalanches. Turbulent wind speeds in excess of 65mph have taken the fluffy low density snow that fell, and broken it down into decomposed fragments of a once previous flake. The dismantling of big snowflakes leaves behind small pieces that lack surface area and can pack together more densely than a feathery flake. Dense snow slabs can allow for the continuation of cracks in the snowpack, that travel farther across the terrain and entrain more snow in the event of an avalanche. 

Today's scenario is not that complex. If you find hollow sounding, smooth and textureless snow in contrast to the firm surfaces around you, you have likely found the avalanche problem. Where the drifted slabs tapper in thickness you may be able to impose failure, since slabs are most brittle where they are thin. Firm and icy sliding surfaces below wind drifted slabs do not allow for good sintering at the snowpack interface. Use crampons, ice axes and good situational awareness today; you never know when you may need to help in the event of a rescue.
