Kernpunkte

The wet upper snowpack should gradually freeze Wednesday as temperatures cool and snow showers return to the West-South zone. The greatest risk you face could come from challenging travel conditions and early season obstacles that reemerged over the past week.

Avalanche Discussion

Rain Tuesday night should fall well into upper elevation terrain causing the snow surface to become wet. The upper snowpack is generally strong and should adjust well to the water. Any overnight avalanches activity should occur within the upper snowpack. As snowlevels drop Wednesday, look for the snow surface to freeze and strengthen, limiting any avalanche danger. At the highest elevations, the wind may drift any new snow into small isolated wind slabs. While these potential avalanches should be thin and relatively harmless, don’t let them knock you off your feet or push you into a terrain trap. If you travel above treeline, keep your eyes peeled for smooth pillow-like drifts on the lee-side of exposed slopes.

Expect challenging travel conditions Wednesday with breakable crust, punchy heavy snow, and icy slopes. As more of the snow surface refreezes, conditions could become particularly slick. The snowpack over the past week took a beating from the warm and windy weather. Many previously buried objects reemerged creating early-season travel conditions. Anticipate open creeks, exposed rocks, and numerous trees. Give yourself extra time to navigate and manage the demanding travel conditions that you could encounter.

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
