Small loose avalanches are possible on steep slopes at upper elevations, where you may find about 6" of new snow over a crust. These slides could run fast and far in consequential terrain, such as steep gullies and couloirs. At lower elevations, travel may be challenging or icy due to dust on crust conditions.

    With 4"-6" of very low-density snow sitting on an icy crust, small loose dry avalanches are possible on steep slopes. The sun may also initiate some loose slides on steep, south-facing slopes by mid-morning. I wouldn't expect these to pack much punch, but it's worth a heads up before considering consequential terrain like steep gullies and couloirs. In terrain like that, they could run far and fast. 

    Winds may begin to increase during the afternoon. The low-density snow may drift easily into shallow slabs near the highest ridgelines. We don't expect this to become much of a player during the daylight hours on Saturday, but conditions may change quickly into the evening.

On Friday, observers found 4"-6" of new snow above 5,000ft near Washington Pass. Winds have been calm to light, and no slab structure was found. A few more flakes may even get squeezed out overnight Friday before the sun comes out Saturday morning. A thick freezing rain crust from December 9th can be found below 5,000ft, and east of about the hairpin on Hwy 20, but not west of the there. Take note what you find above this crust as we head into the next storm cycle.

The snowpack remains shallow at lower elevations, and early season hazards such as downed trees, rocks and creeks are plentiful. At lower elevations and steep slopes, dust on crust conditions may make for icy and/or tricky travel.

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources. Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
