Kernpunkte

This weeks warmer temperatures and time have added weight to the snowpack further strengthening the persistent weak layers.  Daytime temperatures will be in the mid to upper 40's with full solar which will continue to add weight to the pack especially during mid day hours which will cause instability in the upper pack.  As we get into the weekend things should stabilize and lock back up, decreasing avalanche danger.

    The temperatures did not recover much at all last night according to snotel sites.  The solar effect and warm ambient temperatures have made for a soft and heavy upper snowpack in the mountains.  You will notice some heavier slush like snow in most areas other than the cooler north aspects in upper elevations.  Watch for point releases and pinwheeling for signs of instability and use extra cauting on steep slopes that are rapidly warming.  The heavier snow will be found in the top foot of snow that sits on an ice crust from 1.5 weeks ago when it rained and froze.

    We still have our persistent weak layer of surface hoar anywhere from 3-4 feet deep that sits atop a prominent ice crust that is still pretty solid.  Although the upper pack is getting heavier and adding the needed weight to stabilize and  squash out the surface hoar, the surface hoar snow crystals can still be found.  Our tests did not trigger this weaker layer and it is deeper in the pack, but one should think again of the low probability and high consequence if one is to trigger this layer in the wrong spot on steep exposed terrain.  

Avalanche Discussion

Yesterday in the Selkirks about 5 miles North of Schweitzer we found soft snow conditions with a slight surface crust in the shaded areas.  Anything in the sun was pretty soft and spring like.  We did find a few pockets of powder in the North aspects at elevations above 6000 feet.  We were not able to get any reaction on our tests but did find the surface hoar 3 feet down on a North aspect.  The persistent weak layer that has resulted in numerous avalanches in the forecast area is still lingering and persisting as appropriately named.  The crystals appeared to be bonding with the increased weight but was still identifiable and is a concern in extreme steeper terrain.
