Minimal avalanche concerns will exist for most of the day today. Watch for unstable areas of wind drifted snow near and below ridgelines. This will become increasingly problematic this evening into tomorrow with increased winds and snowfall. Avalanche danger is expected to increase around sunset and during the overnight hours.

    Development of this avalanche problem is expected to hold off until this evening when snowfall rates intensify with the arrival of the next storm system. Strong SW winds and new snowfall will drift and form into wind slabs near and below ridgelines. This instability is expected to begin around sunset and become increasingly problematic during the overnight hours. Wind slabs will be most prevalent above treeline and near treeline on NW-N-NE-E-SE aspects. 

    Use clues such as new cornice formations, newly formed wind drifts, snow surface texture, and snow surface cracking to identify areas where wind drifted snow has deposited and slabs of unstable snow may exist. Move around these areas with caution or even an avoidance mindset.

Avalanche Discussion

  • It is unlikely but not impossible that some wet loose instability could continue today at lower elevations, especially if rain falls on snow on steep, shaded, northerly aspects.
  • Snowmelt on SE-S-SW aspects has exposed bare ground in many areas, limiting over snow travel options on these aspects.
  • The old near surface facet layer that was buried on Feb 14 following the prolonged Jan/Feb dry spell has become less of a concern over the past week. In many locations, the moisture content and strength of this layer have increased. What were loose sugary snow grains are now easily pressed into a snowball. Any areas where this layer could still collapse under new snow load will be extremely isolated across the forecast area if they exist at all.
