Frozen surfaces will be quickest to rebound on south and east aspects near and below treeline. The steeper the slope, the more heat it can absorb from the sun. Over time, these will become aspects to avoid if displaying signs and symptoms of unconsolidated snow. Wet-loose slides will break at your feet, so using inconsequential slopes to test for surface instability is a good way to gather information. Reduce your risk by managing the terrain and timing of your travels, and the feedback the snow is giving you from representative slopes.

A wet-loose slide on a steep south-facing slope near treeline. Areas like this that receive residual heat from rock outcroppings and adjacent slopes can heat very fast.
