Kernpunkte

Cold temperatures and winds will subdue the wet-loose avalanche danger above treeline on Mount Shasta. Pockets of wind-drifted snow from strong northwest winds may be found on leeward slopes above 11,000 feet. Human triggered wet slides are possible on southerly and easterly slopes steeper than 30 degrees near and below treeline. Planning your timing and managing your exposure to consequential terrain will increase your margin for safety today.

    Frozen surfaces will be quickest to rebound on south and east aspects near and below treeline. The steeper the slope, the more heat it can absorb from the sun. Over time, these will become aspects to avoid if displaying signs and symptoms of unconsolidated snow. Wet-loose slides will break at your feet, so using inconsequential slopes to test for surface instability is a good way to gather information. Reduce your risk by managing the terrain and timing of your travels, and the feedback the snow is giving you from representative slopes.

  • Cornices

    Only time will tell before these cornices come crashing down. For now, avoid being overly close to their edge and minimize time spent near or underneath them, especially if the slope below is large, steep, and displays wet snow. The more over hung a cornice is, the more it will want to fail.

    Above 11,000 feet a strong northwest wind has drifted snow onto east and southwest aspects. Drifts will have formed below ridgelines and convex terrain features. Watch and assess for pockets of wind effected snow in alpine terrain. Signs of cracking and hollow sounding wind pillows among rock outcroppings are best to stay clear of.

Avalanche Discussion

Observations from the upper mountain on Mount Shasta have been limited. The future weather pattern looks to be ideal for consolidating the snowpack for spring conditions, and we encourage riders and climbers to exercise caution if traveling high on the mountain in the coming weeks. Alpine hazards are inevitable and still exist: Ice fall, rock fall, slick surfaces, wind slabs, cornices, and wet-loose slides are all hazards and conditions one may face. Matching your skill level to the terrain and conditions is huge, but knowing how to use your equipment properly is paramount. Mount Shasta has likely enjoyed the break from having people climbing all over her and shouldn't be taken for granted when the access returns.
