Kernpunkte

The avalanche danger will start out to be very low in the morning but will rise through the day as the Sun helps the temperature reach above 50 degrees at upper elevations. Solar aspects steeper than 35 degrees will become likely spots to trigger wet loose avalanches in the upper 4-6" of the snowpack or more. Use caution on E, SE, S, SW, and West aspects throughout the day.

If you are seeing natural activity on the surface like rollerballs or point releases, move to a lower angled slope or to another shaded or northern aspect. Be extra cautious of overhead wet loose avalanche potential on solar aspects and avoid getting close to the edge of cornices that may fail far back from your weight or from just the heat alone.

    Steep East through West aspects are going to be hazardous throughout the day as we shift wind direction from North to Southwest and temps crack up above 50 degrees in the mountains. Slopes steeper than 35 degrees are going to be shedding snow in the form of point releases and rollerballs, and you could trigger a wet loose avalanche big enough to knock you down or bury you in the wrong spot like a gully or other terrain trap.

    If you are sinking in the previously frozen snowpack past your boot tops, are seeing natural activity like recent avalanches or rollerballs and point releases near rocky outcrops, moving to a Northern aspect or an aspect that is not receiving direct heat is going to be the safest bet, and may have great snow above 7500'.

    Wet loose avalanches can come down from above, so make sure you are not underneath places where wet loose avalanches can come down from above you.

Winds are switching from North to Southwest and are going to bring in warmer temps in the mountains, which with sunshine will warm the snowpack and make wet loose avalanches more likely and wet slab avalanches possible. Wet slab avalanches are almost impossible to predict. Use extra caution if not avoidance of steep solar aspects late in the afternoon and evening and through Thursday when temps begin to cool.

Some of the layers in the upper 2 feet of the snowpack are strong enough to pass snowpack tests yet may be the weak link as our snowpack warms up and undergoes temps in the 50s at upper elevations on Tuesday, a lack of a solid freeze Tuesday evening, and rain on snow up to 8100' on Wednesday.
