Small wet loose avalanches may become possible on sunny slopes. Monitor for warming as you travel, and move to shadier terrain if you find wet snow at the surface. In steep northerly terrain, keep an eye out for isolated wind-drifted instabilities. A small avalanche in extreme terrain brings elevated consequences.

    Overnight cloud cover helped to keep temperatures generally warm at many weather stations. It's likely that any crust that did form is thin, and as the sun comes out, it may soften quickly. Strong winds will help keep the surface cool, and any wet loose activity may be isolated within sunny terrain. As this crust softens and begins to transition from dry to wet, expect the likelihood of wet loose avalanche activity to rise. Recent avalanches and roller balls will be direct signs of instability. Keep your eyes on the terrain above you and reduce your exposure to steep, rocky slopes in the sun. Move to shadier or gentler terrain as the surface transitions to unsupportable and wet.

    Wind speeds have been increasing for the last 24 hours. While there was minimal snow available for transport, anything leftover has likely been redistributed to the northern half of the compass. If you're stepping out to steep, northerly terrain at middle and upper elevations, monitor for cracking in isolated wind slabs. Any wind-drifted slab you may encounter is likely to be small, but a small avalanche in extreme terrain can have compounded consequences. Look out for fresh drifts and dunes, or newly built cornices pointing toward suspect slopes.

Avalanche Discussion

With temperatures slightly cooler than yesterday and wind speeds helping to prevent a significant thaw, expect to find slick surfaces on your travels. Consider bringing an ice axe and/or crampons to reduce your risk of slipping or falling while traveling on firm surfaces.

There are sharks in these waters! While sharks are typically known as independent apex predators, this season they are swimming in hungry packs. Shallowly buried hazards (sharks) have been spotted near the surface across the forecast zone, and their fins continue to poke their way out of the snowpack with every day of continued settlement. Be wary of hazards just below the surface, and expect to find rocks, logs, bushes, and open water during your travels.
