Kernpunkte

Dangerous avalanche conditions exist.  Avalanches can be triggered today in steep wind loaded terrain at the mid and upper elevations.  Terrain near peaks and ridges, particularly in and around cliffs are most susceptible to failure.  Avoid areas that appear steep and  wind loaded, or deeper, than surrounding terrain.  The snowpack structure at Togwotee is poor. Conservative decision making is essential at this time.

    Skiers and riders have the potential to trigger slab avalanches in steep terrain with depths to three feet at higher elevations and to two feet at mid elevations. The recent snow and wind is the primary driver for the formation of these slabs however their failure will involve persistent weak snow layers.  A very strong indication of instability is feeling the sensation of collapse beneath you, when riding on more cohesive surface snow. 

Avalanche Discussion

Over the last week approximately a foot of snow has fallen on Togwotee Pass. Most of that came during the last two days on the heels of a brief very warm period that brought heavy snow to higher elevations and rain to the valleys.  Although still loose powder in most locations, the new snow is denser and more supportive than the weak faceted snow below.  Weak snow is widespread and awaits a larger storm with significant loading for a widespread avalanche cycle in this area.The danger today is real. Human triggered events are likely and backcountry riders and skiers are encouraged to be conservative and stay off of steep terrain at this time.
