Avalanche conditions will continue to become more dangerous today. Expect wind drifts to be large and easily triggered by your weight in exposed areas above 8,000'. Expect these slabs to be 2 feet thick and easily capable of burying a person. Slabs may be even thicker, and firm, in some areas and may break upslope above you.  Triggering an avalanche today is likely in areas where wind has drifted snow.

    Winds slabs were easily  triggered by skiers yesterday and will remain sensitive to triggering today. These slabs grew in size overnight as snow fell and will continue to grow in size today with more snowfall and increasing southwest and west wind. Beware of wind loaded areas at the base of cliffs and at the exits of steep gullies where wind driven snow has accumulated. In prime areas like this, slabs could be up to three feet thick. There is also a chance that areas that receive the heaviest amount of wind loading could avalanche naturally later in the day so consider what's overhead if you enter big alpine terrain.

    Dry loose avalanches on steep terrain over 35° will occur easily today and could carry you or trigger thicker slabs. Recent snow has fallen on a variety of different snow surfaces with the potetnial for all the new snow to move quickly and easily upon the old snow surface below. Perform quick hand shear tests and assess how the recent snow is bonding to old snow surfaces.

    A small wind slab in northwest facing terrain off Cardiac Ridge at 9,600’. The slab failed on old snow down about 14”. Expect avalanche like this to be up to twice as thick today.

    Given the quantity of recent snowfall and the precipitation type changes observed yesterday, it would be wise to assume storm slabs may be sensitive to triggering in very steep, wind sheltered locations. Assume this snow is guilty until proven innocent. Look for shooting cracks in the snow surfaces and test small slopes before committing to larger ones.

    A small soft slab involving only the top 4-6” of recent snow. Northeast aspect at 8,900’. More snow overnight and today will increase the size of slabs like these.
