Kernpunkte

Human triggered avalanches up to a foot deep are possible in very steep and wind loaded terrain above 9,000’ today. Above freezing temperatures at the middle and low elevations will make triggering a small wet snow avalanche possible on some very steep terrain features. Carefully evaluate the snowpack for unstable wind drifted snow up high and wet snow problems lower down.

The upper elevations of the Tetons have received about 10 inches of snow in the past 48 hours, four of which fell overnight. This precipitation was accompanied by strong westerly winds with average speeds reaching 40 mph on exposed upper elevation ridgelines. Skiers and riders have the potential to trigger stiff wind slabs up to a foot deep on very steep (>35°) and wind loaded slopes above 9,000’. Likely trigger spots include convex starting zones, cross loaded couloirs, and steep terrain below cliff bands. Cracking, collapsing, and recent avalanche activity indicate that the new snow is unstable. Move to low angle terrain if these signs are present.

Temperatures below 9,000’ rose to, or above freezing, last night and are expected to remain warm today. Human triggered wet loose avalanches will be possible on some very steep terrain features at the middle and low elevations. These avalanches will be small, but could entrain more snow than expected and knock you off your feet. This problem will be less of an issue at the low elevations where less recent snow has fallen. Skies are forecasted to be mostly cloudy today, but any periods of prolonged sunshine will make this problem more reactive. Be prepared for wet snow to move on very steep terrain features and plan travel accordingly.
