A storm will impact the forecast region starting tonight, causing a spike in avalanche danger. Meanwhile, stay vigilant for recently formed wind slabs on steep north, east, and south aspects near and above treeline. Evaluate snow and terrain carefully, and identify features of concern.

    Yesterday, northwest winds were ripping above treeline for the majority of the day. With large amounts of dry snow available for transport, it's not out of the question that near treeline also developed a few fresh wind slabs. Today, the potential exists for wind slabs to continue to form on leeward north, east, and south aspects on the downwind sides of ridgelines, convex rollovers, cliff bands, and rock outcroppings. Cross-loading will be most prominent in gullies and chutes above treeline. Textured or scoured surfaces indicate the wind's presence. Areas of highest likelihood to encounter a wind slab will be in steep pockets of convex terrain and on unsupported slopes.

    With limited access and data, uncertainty exists regarding the wind's full effect on the snow near treeline. Field observations will be your best method for obtaining an accurate picture.

Avalanche Discussion

Enjoy the last day of semi-stable weather before we head back into a stormy period. If you're wondering what the backcountry conditions are like, here's an inside scoop. Powder snow is staying preserved in sheltered areas on most aspects, with northerly aspects holding the best quality. Snow coverage is good at lower elevations and excellent at mid and upper elevations. Wind-effected snow exists in the alpine and is soft and enjoyable in select areas. Surfaces have begun to develop crusts on solar aspects in specific areas near and below treeline.  

Moving forward, you can expect more winter weather, snow, and rising avalanche danger! A widespread layer of surface hoar has developed on all aspects near and below treeline throughout the forecast zone. It exists in atypical locations like the tops of ridgelines, south-facing slopes, and avalanche start zones. Some of it may be destroyed by the incoming storm, but likely not all. As this layer gets buried, a persistent avalanche problem could emerge. Until proven otherwise, it's time to be heads-up!
