It will be possible to trigger a slab avalanche 1-2' thick in wind loaded areas today with a distant chance of avalanches involving buried weak layers 3-4' thick.  Continue to treat the steepest wind affected slopes with caution and use standard safe travel techniques.

    About a foot of snow fell since Sunday with wind slab activity slowly tapering in frequency since then. These slabs may be possible to trigger today though they are are likely to be quite stubborn. Wind-sculpted surface snow, pillows and cornices are all signs pointing to this problem. Most of the slabs that you'll find will be firm but may still crack and fail in the steepest locations, particularly where terrain configuration is working against you. Ridgetops, beneath cornices, convexeties, unsupported slopes or beneath cliffs are where you are most likely to find these slabs. You'll find better, softer snow for riding elsewhere in sheltered locations where this problem doesn't exist.

    This avalanche was likely triggered late Sunday afternoon. The old, brown rain crust buried in early February is visible near the center of the crown which was about 3' deep. It seems likely that this was triggered by a rider near the base of the slope. The debris was easily deep enough to bury someone.

    Slabs overlying weak layers buried 2-3 feet deep remain possible to trigger on very steep slopes over 35°. Triggering buried weak layers, especially the facet/crust layer buried in early February is unlikely in most places due it's depth of burial. Steep, rocky and wind affected slopes where the layer is closer to the surface is the most likely place that this problem exists.  Signs of instability such as cracking, collapsing, or recent avalanches won't serve as clues to this problem type. Multiple tracks on a slope also do not indicate that a slope is stable. You'll find an example of this type of problem where  in this video.

    Large, natural persistent slab avalanche that failed on a very steep, rocky and unsupported slope near Smoot.

Snow turned to rain briefly in this zone on Sunday. You'll find a rain/temperature crust below about 8,500' in this zone along with virtually no new snow. Above that elevation, conditions are much better with softer snow in sheltered areas and lots of wind-pressed surfaces. Stability is trending the right direction with buried weak layers that seem to have plaqued the region this season becoming deeply buried and (mostly) out of reach of the impact of skiers and riders.
