Kernpunkte

Watch out for isolated pockets of wind-drifted snow in very steep terrain. Otherwise, generally stable avalanche conditions exist across the forecast region. The chance of triggering a persistent slab avalanche is unlikely. Travel one at a time in steep terrain, keep eyes on your partners, and avoid terrain traps.

    Weak snow formed in November is buried beneath 2 to 5 feet of snow at the base of our snowpack. The chance of triggering an avalanche that fails on this layer is slim, but not out of the question. We still see poor snowpack structure in snowpits, and this type of avalanche problem can lurk around for some time. Very steep, rocky, previously wind affected terrain is most suspect, as trigger points may be closer to the surface. Carefully assess slopes with these characteristics.

    This was the last reported persistent slab avalanche that resulted in a partial burial. 

Avalanche Discussion

The last 6 days have provided a change of pace from the clear-skied high pressure we have been experiencing since around January 10th. The snow surface has been refreshed with about 2 to 4 inches of snow. 

Low danger doesn’t mean no danger. Here are the two scenarios where you might trigger an avalanche:

  • Small wind slabs in isolated terrain. These slabs may exist at upper elevations on very steep leeward slopes in and around wind affected terrain. While a small wind slab might not be big enough to bury you, it could take you off your feet or sled and be dangerous in consequential terrain.
  • Larger persistent slab avalanches. This problem is described above under Persistent Slab. Although we haven’t seen an avalanche breaking on this layer since the New Year, poor snowpack structure still exists. These avalanches can do weird things and surprise us. The best way to increase your margin of safety is to travel one at a time in avalanche terrain, keep eyes on your partners, and avoid terrain traps.
