Carefully assess steep chutes and slopes below ridgelines where rounded drifts can crack around you. Stiff wind slabs can break in unexpected ways. If you see rollerballs tumbling down sunny slopes, it’s time to move to shadier terrain before wet loose avalanches become a problem.

    An extreme wind event two days ago left hard wind slabs across exposed terrain. Though they're on a stabilizing trend,  you can still trigger a slab avalanche today. Assess steep slopes where drifted snow has filled in below ridges and in gullies before committing to your line. 

    You can trigger hard slabs from the edge where they’re thinner. Hard wind slabs can take you by surprise and break above you. Shooting cracks are a warning sign that you’ve found a problem spot. Wind-sheltered terrain will have softer snow.

    Temperatures will climb above freezing for the first time in several days. This is the first time cold, dry snow could get wet. Snow surface warming will depend on cloud cover and wind. If you’re on steep sunny slopes and feel the snow getting sticky and wet, that’s a good sign that wet loose avalanches are becoming possible. Rollerballs tumbling down from rocky areas are signs that it’s probably time to move to a colder, shadier aspect.

Avalanche Discussion

A rain crust from New Year's is buried under 15 to 30 inches of snow. We are tracking a layer of facets that developed around the crust. While the crust exists across the forecast region on all aspects up to around 11,000 feet, the facets seem less widespread. We've seen them on northerly aspects in the northern half of the zone. Forecasters recently got localized cracking and propagating snowpack test results on this layer in Lee Vining. We’re monitoring this concerning structure as big temperature swings change the crust and the slab above it. Pay attention to any signs of instability you may see, like cracking or collapsing in the snowpack. Let us know if you find weak snow around this crust.
