Kernpunkte

The snowpack is mostly stable. Clearing skies this afternoon will drive increasing temperatures and provide the possibility of small wet slides on sunlit aspects. Watch for areas where warming is excessive and the snow surface becomes unsupportable.

    Overnight temperatures were significantly colder than the last 2 nights. Snow surfaces will be hard and frozen this morning. Wet loose slides will become possible this afternoon on sunny slopes, particularly in steep rocky areas. The extent and sensitivity of this problem will be dependent on the amount of sunlight received in specific locations which is hard to predict given the nature of the system passing through this am. Pay attention to conditions, if the snow surface becomes wet and unsupportive or if you start to see sunballing or other wet slide activity, it is time to find colder terrain or retreat from avalanche exposure. 

Avalanche Discussion

Low danger does not mean no danger exists. The difference between yesterday’s and today’s rating is simply because temperatures are starting colder and because cloud cover this morning should prevent rapid softening of the snow surface. If temperatures rise more than expected, the chance for wet slides will be more widespread than low danger may indicate.  

A change in the weather is coming. Snow will fall on Sunday night and Monday. Take note of snow surfaces wherever you can to understand future avalanche problems. Generally speaking, hard melt-freeze crusts can be found in areas that receive sun exposure this time of year, particularly at higher elevations. Settled powder (which is mostly near surface facets) can be found in colder terrain. In high north facing terrain wind crusts and sastrugi can be found. Surface hoar growth was widespread over the last several weeks in areas prone to its development. Some of that surface hoar has melted and been absorbed into the snowpack while it can be well preserved in shaded terrain.
