Avalanche Activity

Gradual increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of new snow and strong wind. This applies in particular in the regions exposed to heavier precipitation.

As a consequence of new snow and a moderate to strong wind from northwesterly directions, wind slabs will form over a wide area. This applies in particular in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain especially above the tree line. New snow and wind slabs can be released, even by a single winter sport participant and reach large size. The avalanche prone locations are barely recognisable because of the poor visibility. Meticulous route selection is required. Maintaining distances between individuals and one-at-a-time descents are recommended. Additionally avalanches can also be released in deep layers and reach very large size in isolated cases in particular on shady slopes. This applies in particular in case of a large load.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area over a wide area 20 to 40 cm of snow will fall above approximately 1500 m. As a consequence of new snow and a moderate to strong wind from northwesterly directions, further wind slabs formed in particular above the tree line. The new snow and wind slabs are lying on soft layers on wind-protected shady slopes. Intermediate and high altitudes: Precarious weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack in particular on shady slopes.

Tendency

Further increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of new snow and stormy weather.
