Storm-strength winds persist - plus danger of falling

Avalanche danger is generally low. On high-altitude east-facing slopes there are isolated snowdrift patches in backcountry touring terrain. Above 2000 m, isolated slab avalanches can be triggered on shady slopes. As a result of higher temperatures, small wet naturally triggered avalanches are possible on steep rough and rocky slopes.

Snowpack Structure

The snowdrifts are able to settle further due to higher temperatures, otherwise the snowpack surface is hard and icy at high altitudes. At intermediate altitudes the snowpak is moist-to-wet, also rotten. The nights are far too mild, the snowpack below 1500 m can’t freeze. On steep shady slopes at high altitudes (above 2000 m), expansive metamorphosis is weakening the snowpack base. The slopes at intermediate and lower altitudes are becoming bare of snow.

Weather Forecast

On Tuesday it will again be sunny and mild, with a few thin cirrus clouds. The W/NW winds will be lighter than in recent days. Mild: at 2000 m: +3 degrees.

Tendency

On Wednesday, still sunny and mild. In the northern regions of Styria, clouds will move in. Avalanche danger levels are not expected to change significantly. On south-facing slopes, naturally triggered wet-snow avalanches can’t be excluded.
