Kernpunkte

Areas of unstable snow exist on steep slopes at the mid and upper elevations. Dense surface slabs up to 30 inches in depth will become increasingly sensitive to human triggers as the day warms. Yesterday a snowboarder narrowly escaped serious injury or worse after triggering a large slab on Pucker Face south of the boundary of the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Similar events are possible today and could end tragically, especially on steep slopes that receive abundant sunshine.

At the mid and upper elevations dense, slab avalanches up to 30 inches in depth could be human triggered on steep slopes. Warming temperatures and sunshine will increase the likelihood for skiers and riders to trigger these slabs.

Avalanche Discussion

A warm front in a southerly flow will bring some mountain snow showers and valley rain showers to the region overnight. This flow will favor the Salt River, Snake River and the Wyoming Ranges. Several inches of new snow accumulation are possible by sunrise at the higher elevations. Snowfall will continue into Wednesday morning and is expected to diminish during the day. Winds will be light and variable and temperatures will be in the teens and 20s. The general avalanche hazard is expected to MODERATE at the mid and upper elevations where dense slabs up to two feet in depth could be human triggered in very steep active avalanche paths and cliff areas. The hazard is expected to be LOW at the lower elevations.
