Avalanche Activity

GC for 26/2. Instabilities, greatest in evening, mainly on steep N-E-SE aspects above 700m. Cornices fragile. Considerable hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Following a period of instability in the evening the snowpack will then slowly consolidate. Greatest instabilities will be on steep North through East to South-East aspects above 700 metres. Other aspects will generally be scoured and stable. Cornices will be fragile and prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Very strong Southerly winds. Light rain and summit snow in the evening followed by a mostly dry day. Freezing level close to the higher summits. Observed Weather Influences: It was a dry morning with light Westerly winds. The wind backed to become South-Westerly in the afternoon with precipitation falling as snow on the summits. The freezing level rose to around 800 metres by midday. ObservedSnowStability: Areas of moderately and poorly bonded windslab are present mainly on North through East to South-East aspects above 600 metres. Fragile cornices are present above these aspects. Areas exposed to the recent strong winds are icy and stable. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
