Avalanche Activity

NC for 20/2 Period of instability overnight. Fresh windslab building on NE to SE aspects above 900m through day. Considerable hazard

Forecast Snow Stability: There will be a period of instability overnight as the temperature rises and the snowpack becomes moist. The snowpack will consolidate and stabilise as the freezing level drops through the day. However, fresh areas of unstable windslab will develop through the day on mainly North-East to South-East aspects above 900 metres. Below 900 metres stability will be better. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Overnight the freezing level will briefly rise to around 1500 metres before dropping steadily through the day to 600 metres by late afternoon. Overnight snow will turn to rain at all levels before turning showery and to snow at progressively lower levels showery through the day. Winds will be Southerly overnight, veering Westerly during the day. Observed Weather Influences: A dry and settled day with light winds and long sunny spells. The freezing level is around 500 metres. ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack is starting to slowly consolidate in the settled conditions. However, some instabilities are present in the deposits of windslab which are mainly found on North-East to South-East aspects above 800 metres. Below this level the uniform snow cover is generally shall and stability is better. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
