A favourable avalanche situation will prevail

Individual avalanche prone locations are to be found on very steep shady slopes. Avalanches can in very isolated cases be released in the old snowpack. Apart from the danger of being buried, restraint should be exercised as well in view of the danger of avalanches sweeping people along and giving rise to falls.

The snowpack structuring on the northern flank of the Alps is favourable over widespread areas. Stability tests (rutschblocks and ECT's) broke mostly upon medium-to-high loading in a weak layer above or beneath the rain crust which formed at the end of December. From the central Valais over the northern Ticino as far as Grisons there are weak layers more deeply embedded inside the snowpack. In these layers, individual stability tests broke. However, for a longer period there have been hardly any further avalanche triggerings from these layers reported. At high altitudes, small-sized snowdrift accumulations can be generated from place to place.

Following a night of clear skies it was sunny in the mountains. Fresh snow: - Temperature: At midday at 2000 m, +6 °C. Wind: Winds were light. Following a night of clear skies it will be predominantly sunny in the mountains during the daytime hours. Fresh snow: - Temperature: Temperatures are expected to drop. At midday at 2000 m: to between -3 °C in the northern regions and +2 °C in the southern regions. Wind: - Winds in the northern regions will be blowing at light to moderate strength, to some extent at strong velocity at high altitude, from westerly directions; - in the southern regions, winds will be light in the early morning, during the afternoon blowing at strong velocity from northerly directions.

On Sunday night, skies will be predominantly clear. During the latter part of the night in northern regions, some clouds are expected to move in. During the daytime on Monday in the northeastern regions, skies will be partly cloudy and a small amount of snowfall is possible. In the other regions of Switzerland it will be predominantly sunny. In the northern region a predominantly moderate-strength westerly to northerly wind will be blowing. In the southern regions a moderate-to-strong velocity northerly winds will be blowing. The zero-degree level will lie between 1200 m in the northern regions and 1800 m in the southern regions. On Tuesday it will be predominantly sunny in the mountains and temperatures are expected to rise somewhat. Winds will be blowing at light to moderate strength from easterly directions. Avalanche dangers are not expected to change significantly.
