Avalanche Activity

GC23/3 Snow on S-SW winds. Unstable w\'slab sheltered gullies NW-N-E slopes above 800m. Old snow firm and icy Avalanche haz Moderate

Forecast Snow Stability: Wind transport and snow showers will form unstable windslab in sheltered areas. Most affected will be summit gullies and on steeper scarp slopes with a mainly North-Westerly through North to Easterly aspect above 800 metres. Other areas may be affected by cross loading. The older snowpack, where exposed, will be firm and icy in places. Cornices will be fragile and prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Fresh to strong South to South-Westerly winds with snow showers above 600 metres will affect the area overnight and on Thursday. The freezing level will initially be around 800 metres rising to 1200 metres through the course of the day. Observed Weather Influences: It was mild and wet overnight turning to colder conditions today. Showers of snow and hail have affected slopes above 800 metres. Winds have been strong to gale force, generally South-Westerly. There have been the odd rumbles of thunder. ObservedSnowStability: A light cover of new snow is lying on slopes mainly above 800 metres. Isolated pockets of windslab are forming in areas sheltered from the very strong South-Westerly airflow. Gully tops and scarp slopes around corrie rims are most affected; these areas are generally avoidable. The general snow cover mainly exists in the higher North and East facing corries. Fresh cornices are fragile. The avalanche hazard is Low.
