Slabs multiple feet thick have formed below, near, and above treeline. Southerly winds have loaded new snow onto leeward terrain such as below ridgelines and in gullies, primarily on west through north through east aspects. Although slabs are deepest in wind-loaded terrain, unstable snow may exist on all aspects and at all elevations.
Avalanches could release on density changes within the new snow, or on deeper layers in the snowpack. There remains some uncertainty regarding the sensitivity of these slabs to natural and human-triggered releases. However, storm cycles like this have produced very large, full-path avalanches in popular recreation areas on the south side of Mount Shasta, including Avalanche Gulch and the Old Ski Bowl. Know where you are going if traveling in the backcountry. Travel in, near, or below steep slopes is not recommended today. Give the new snow time to settle before heading into steep terrain.
There are opportunities for recreation in non-avalanche terrain on slopes below 30 degrees and not underneath or adjacent to steeper terrain. Careful route planning is essential.
