    What and where is it:Large, destructive slabs of wind-drifted snow are likely to naturally avalanche today across steep terrain in eastern ravines. Slab depth is likely to be several feet thick. Naturally occurring avalanches will be most likely to occur this morning, but even as the winds decrease in the afternoon, the likelihood of a person triggering a large wind slab avalanche remains very high. 

    How can you recognize it: Plumes of blowing snow from strong westerly winds are all the evidence you need today to tell you that conditions are very dangerous. Below 3000 feet in elevation, look for stiffer, hollow-feeling slabs, recent avalanche activity, and long shooting cracks as clear signs of instability.How can you manage it: Travel in south, east, and north-facing avalanche terrain above 3000 feet in elevation is NOT recommended. Avoid this terrain to mitigate the chance of being buried in a large or very large avalanche. Avalanches could run far into flat runout zones that are often thought to be safe. Give avalanche terrain a wide margin today.

    What and where is it:14 - 18 inches of new, light density snow is widespread across west-facing aspects below 5000 feet. Slabs of soft new snow may be very sensitive to your weight, and be large enough to bury you. Overnight, these slabs may have stiffened in their structure, increasing the potential for propagation across larger slopes.

    How can you recognize it: A consistent blanket of recent storm snow will be easy to find today. Look out for recent avalanche activity, shooting cracks in the snow under your feet, and areas of soft snow with a stiffer, cohesive snow surface as clear signs of dangerous conditions. How can you manage it: Take the time to carefully plan routes that mitigate your exposure to large, steep, and open snow slopes and be conservative in your decision making. Dig down into the snow to assess the sensitivity and potential size of a storm slab. Understand that people in the terrain above you could pose a significant risk if they trigger an avalanche.

Avalanche Discussion

Today is not the day to try and out-smart or out-manage the avalanche problem, especially in eastern ravines. Multiple human-triggered avalanches were reported yesterday (incident 1, incident 2, incident 3), and conditions today have only become more dangerous.Wind speeds overnight and through mid-day today will likely be effective at transporting large amounts of snow onto an already thick and unstable slab. Even if the chance of natural avalanches decreases this afternoon as wind speeds drop off, your chance of triggering a large and destructive avalanche remains high. At lower elevations, expect significantly less wind effect on the recent storm slab. While avalanche terrain below 3000 feet will not be nearly as dangerous, there is still a potential of triggering a large avalanche in the recent storm snow, especially after it has had some time to settle and become more cohesive overnight with time and a bit of wind.
