There was a lot of snow available for transport after this last round of snowfall, and a lot of it has moved around thanks to high winds in the last 36 hours. Sustained West/Southwest winds overnight and throughout today will continue to transport snow onto leeward terrain, creating stiffer and harder slabs. These wind slabs have become fairly large (3-4 feet deep) in some places, where they will exhibit the characteristics of a hard slab. If you triggered a wind slab on a large, open slope today, it could surprise you by breaking well above you and propagating across a wide section of the slope. Be extra suspect of terrain on the leeward side of ridgelines today in addition to gully features that see cross-loading, and be on the lookout for wind-drifted pillows. Pay attention to the most obvious signs of wind slab development such as stiffening snow underfoot, shooting cracks, or loud collapses. Any wind slab avalanche would of course be dangerous on its own, but also has the potential to step down into deeper weak layers, creating a larger and more destructive avalanche.
