Wet snow instabilities will grow in size and distribution quickly today as the sun comes out and temperatures rise above seasonal averages. Carefully evaluate changes to the surface snow and time your day to be away from steep slopes, start zones, and the runouts of avalanche paths as the upper snowpack thaws, becoming wet and unstable.

    Loose-wet avalanche activity will become likely today as we see the first significant warm-up since our most recent storms.  Expect avalanche concerns to increase quickly as the sun comes out this morning, and we reach above-average temperatures at all elevations. Areas near rock outcroppings, cliff bands, and tight rocky couloirs where the effects of warming are amplified are particularly susceptible to increased warming and will act as good trigger points. Wet, sticky snow surfaces, rollerballs and pinwheels, and increasing boot penetration are all signs of surface warming and may foreshadow larger point-release avalanches. Be wary of overhead hazards today and be ready to retreat if the surface snow thaws, causing you to sink into deep wet snow.

    Strong winds yesterday led to some modest amounts of wind transport and subsequent deposition at upper elevations and along the Sierra crest.  Lingering and isolated wind slabs will be gaining strength but may still be sensitive to human triggers. Recent cornice growth and drifting on solar aspects, hollow drum-like snow surfaces, and shooting cracks in surface snow are all signs that indicate nearby wind deposits. Be suspect of terrain features that encourage drifting, such as the leeward sides of ridgelines, alpine couloirs, gully features, and cross-loaded depressions. Keep in mind that even a small avalanche can have elevated consequences in exposed or extreme terrain.

Snowpacks don’t like rapid change. On the heels of an unseasonably cold and snowy weekend, The Eastern Sierra will see its first major warm-up today. You can expect avalanche concerns to grow in size and distribution quickly as the day progresses. Concerning avalanches will become problematic first on Easterly aspects as the sun comes out this morning before spreading around the compass rose. Lingering wind slabs in the high alpine and large cornice features will also be worth considering today. Evaluate snow carefully along ridgelines and give cornice features a wide berth, especially where they hang above terrain where a fall would have greater consequences.

We are firmly into the season where special considerations are important when planning your adventures. Timing, specialized tools, and remaining flexible in your route choice will be advantageous.
