Kernpunkte

While avalanches are expected to be very unlikely today, low hazard does not mean no hazard. Poor structure lingers at the base of the snowpack. New problems could form later today if snowfall becomes heavy or wind transport begins to build slabs.

    Triggering a persistent slab avalanche on weak snow buried 2-4 feet deep is very unlikely but not impossible. The most probable areas to trigger a persistent slab avalanche includesteep, rocky, and wind-affected slopes on the north half of the compass. These areas contain thin, shallow spots where riders can easily impact weak layers. Shallower snow is also found east of the continental divide and south towards the Gros Ventre Range. Previous tracks on a slope are not an indicator of stability. Use caution in steep terrain and give yourself a wide margin of error on slopes with high consequences or near terrain traps. Move to low-angle terrain to avoid this problem. The last known persistent slab avalanche occurred on 3/16 in Upper Deception Creek. On 3/19, a wet slab avalanche failing on these persistent weak layers occurred on Breccia.

Avalanche Discussion

Wet snow problems have been removed from the hazard list today as the weather has cooled. This winter the snowpack in the Togwotee region has been characterized by weak snow at the base and that will last throughout the season. Persistent slab avalanches remain on the problem list even with a LOW rating. With new snow and wind expected today there is a potential for storm instabilities to form. If enough snow gets moved around by the wind, pockets of slabs could build on the surface and possibly create new avalanche hazards. Watch out for blowing snow, and note where the wind is moving it.

BTAC will be issuing the final daily avalanche forecast on Saturday, April 20th but will continue with General Snow and Avalanche Information Bulletins two times per week until May. We will update the Big Sheet daily until June 1st.
